The West Virginia medical malpractice attorneys at the Manchin Injury Law Group are currently investigating claims related to Johnson & Johnson’s Talcum Powder (baby powder) causing ovarian cancer in women. Recent studies suggest that talcum powder has been found to cause ovarian cancer when used by women for perineal hygiene.
Johnson & Johnson has known about the link between the use of talcum powder and an association of risk of ovarian cancer for years. Unfortunately, the company failed to warn users of the product about such a risk. Research as far back as the 1970s suggested evidence of the cancerous properties of talc. Talc is one of the main ingredients in baby powder, and is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate and has been linked to various cancers including ovarian cancer.
A 2009 study by Dr. Margaret Gates found that women who use talcum powder around their genital area have a 40 percent higher risk of ovarian cancer versus those who do not use talcum powder. The Journal of Cancer Prevention Research has stated that “genital powder has been associated with risk of epithelial ovarian cancer in some, but not all, epidemiologic investigations possibly reflecting the carcinogenic effects of talc particles found in most of these products.” Notwithstanding the research, Johnson & Johnson continued to market its talcum powder for hygienic uses for women without warning of the risks associated with such use.
