FAIRMONT, W. Va. (WDTV) – At any minute, first responders can be called to a scene.
“You never know what the next call is going to be,” said Stephanie Vandetta, Assistance Chief of Operations for the Marion County Rescue Squad. “I wanted to be that person to be first on the scene.”
Vandetta became an EMT for the state of West Virginia in 2008. Throughout her career, she started the Paramedic Program in Pierpont Community and Technical College. She’s also currently enrolled taking a critical care paramedic program through HealthNet Aeromedical Services.
“It’s about the team that makes it work,” she said.
For her hard work and dedication, Vandetta was chosen as this month’s First Responder of the Month and recognized by the Manchin Injury Law Group.
“It’ really neat for our community to understand these people, that they don’t see that often and don’t appreciate all the things they do behind the scenes,” said Tim Manchin, attorney for the Manchin Injury Law Group.
Vandetta’s resume is quite extensive.
“She’s been taking training in swift water rescue operations and is part of the fire rehab program,” said Taylor Downs, partner and attorney at the Manchin Injury Law Group.
Vandetta is also involved with the mock DUI program at local high schools.
“We educate the children or teenagers about the consequences if they do decide to drink and drive,” she said.
And dresses up as a superhero to visit kids at WVU Children’s Hospital.
“We’re able to brighten the kids’ day with just a smile,” said Vandetta.
She’s also a full-time mom of three kids and is very involved with their schooling and activities. With all her years of experience, she says she can balance it all.
“It’ all about teamwork, just like in EMS,” she said.
Vandetta received a $250 check, which will be donated to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation. Check out WDTV’s web exclusive to find out why she chose it.
